Dr. Billy Cohn Discusses Engineering and Healthcare During Key... Dr. Billy Cohn Discusses Engineering and Healthcare During Key... Dr. Billy Cohn Discusses Engineering in Healthcare During Keynote EventDr. Billy Cohn, the featured speaker at the IMECE 2015 keynote event, is a world-renowned heart surgeon and medical device inventor who has more than 90 U.S. patents either granted or pending and another 60 international patents. During the keynote event on Nov. 16 at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Conference and Exposition in Houston, William E. (Billy) Cohn, M.D., world-renowned heart surgeon and medical device inventor, told the engineers in the packed Hilton of the Americas ballroom that the healthcare field was one in desperate need of their skills and expertise.Engineering in Healthcare was the theme of the special keynote session by Dr. Cohn, who is the director of the Center for Technology and Innovation, the associate director of laboratory surgery research in the Center for Cardiac Support and director of the Cullen Cardiovascular Research Laboratory at the Texas Heart Institute at St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital in Houston. Cohn, who has been developing medical devices since medical school, has more than 90 U.S. patents either granted or pending, and an additional 60 international patents for his medical innovations.Following an introduction by ASME Executive Director Thomas Loughlin, Cohn began his presentation by noting that although he had spent many years training to be a heart surgeon, we was basically a frustrated mechanical engineer. I went to medical school for four years, did five years of general surgery residency, and then three years of cardiac surgery residency, he said. It takes 12 years of additional training after college to be a heart surgeon. But I spent most of my off-time in evenings and weekends doing mechanical engineering. I have a real passion for heart surgery, but I also have a passion for medical device innovatio n. Dr. Cohn shows the keynote audience examples of several of the medical devices hes invented.Noting that the mechanical engineers he had worked with throughout his career had played a vital role in making the devices he invented commercially viable, Cohn warned the audience of a catastrophe looming in our immediate future the rising cost of healthcare. The amount of money being spent on healthcare in the United States is currently growing at a rate that is three times greater than the increase in U.S. gross domestic product. Within the next 10 to 20 years, those costs will become unsustainable, he said. So only through innovation, finding less expensive ways to identify disease earlier in its course, to treat and prevent major illness and major hospitalizations, are we going to be able to avoid this disaster, Cohn said. And where is that innovation going to come from? Its going to come from engineers. I know ASMEs mission statement is to leverage engineering expertise and prowes s to make the quality of life better for all of us. To make the world safer and better. Well I argue that healthcare innovation is a very real and very necessary way to accomplish that objective. ASME Executive Director Thomas Loughlin (right) joined Dr. Cohn for a question-and-answer session after the main presentation. Throughout his presentation, Cohn mentioned several lessons that he had learned during his quest to become a medical device innovator - lessons that engineers should keep in mind as they develop their own innovations. These included focusing on a field that you truly understand, being resourceful while prototyping, and maintaining an open mind when resourcing materials for your project.Keeping your invention simple is another important lesson learned. You know if you have an idea, and you start talking to key opinion leaders about it, and they tell you why its too simple to work, he said. Hurry up and patent it because its probably the most brilliant thing in th e world. In all of the greatest innovations in modern healthcare, the sage and august opinion leaders said, This will never work. And of course all of them did. (Left to right) ASME Executive Director Thomas Loughlin, keynote presenter Dr. Billy Cohn, ASME President Julio Guerrero and ASME President-Elect K. Keith Roe.Cohn also urged the engineers in the audience not to be afraid to talk about the ideas they have. Everybodys got ideas, and theyre hesitant to share them, he said. Which is tragic, because the most common thing that happens with a great idea is nothing. And so, I encourage you if youve got an idea, go ahead and protect it. Send in a patent so you can share your idea with everybody. Because by socializing ideas, you get new ideas. It cross-pollinates, and cross-fertilizes, and becomes something important. Cohns keynote talk was preceded by the unveiling of ASMEs new State of the Society video, which was introduced by ASME President Julio C. Guerrero, and the presentati on of a video covering the ASME Innovation Showcase (ISHOW), which was introduced by Tom Loughlin. ASME President-Elect K. Keith Roe provided closing remarks for the session.

Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978

Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978The Pregnancy Discrimination Act prohibits employers from making hiring and other job-related decisions that discriminate against women who are pregnant. It was enacted in 1978. Finding out you are pregnant is a very joyous thing for most women- nachrichten you will likely look forward to sharing with all your friends and family- but wait a moment or two before telling your coworkers about it. Once they know, your boss will too, and while yours may be wonderfully receptive of this news, leid all will be. Pregnancy discrimination is a real thing. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the federal agency that interprets and enforces federal employment discrimination laws, reports that in fiscal year 2018 it received 2,790 complaints of pregnancy discrimination (Pregnancy Discrimination Charges FY 2010 - FY 2018. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission). Many women are fired or passed over for a promotion afte r they announce their pregnancy. Before sharing your good news in the workplace, know your rights under the law and what to do if a potential or current employer doesnt abide by them. How the Pregnancy Discrimination Act Protects Women The Pregnancy Discrimination Act requires employers to treat pregnant women the same way they do all other workers or job applicants. It is an amendment to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964and is covered under sex discrimination. Employers may not make decisions about hiring applicants or firing or promoting workers based on pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. All companies that employ 15 or more people are subject to this law. Here is how the law protects pregnant job seekers and employees Employers cannot refuse to hire applicants because of their pregnancy or pregnancy-related conditions. An employer is not required, however, to hire an unqualified candidate or one who is less qualified than another.Employers cant requ ire pregnant workers to submit to special procedures that determine their ability to perform job duties unless the employer holds all other employees and job applicants to the same requirement.Ifa pregnancy-related medical condition keeps a worker from performing job duties, the employer must not treat that individual any differently than other temporarily disabled employees in making accommodations. Employers may not prohibit pregnant employees from working and may not refuse to allow them to return to work after giving birth.Employer-provided health insurance plans must not treat pregnancy-related conditions any differently than they do other medical issues.Employers cant require pregnant workers to pay larger health insurance deductibles than non-pregnant employees. What Should Victims of Pregnancy Discrimination Do? If your employer or prospective employer has discriminated against you, file a claim with the EEOC. It is essential to be able to state what led to your conclusi on. Have as much proof as possible to back up your claim including names of witnesses.Otherwise, it is only your word against your employers. Employees must file a claim within 180 days of the event. This time limit is extended to 300 days if there is a state or local law that also covers pregnancy discrimination. Job applicants must file a claim within 45 days. Step-by-Step Guide to Filing Charges Go to theEEOC Public Portalto submit an inquiry. Answer the five general questions listed there. Your answers will determineif the EEOC can help you. Alternatively, you can submit an inquiryat one of EEOCs 53 field offices located throughout the county or by phone at1-800-669-4000.If you are using the EEOC Public Portal and are told the agency can help, go ahead and submit your inquiry.Remember that submitting an inquiry is only the first step and is not the same as submitting a charge of discrimination. It allows you to set up an intake interview with an EEOC staff memberat one of 53 fie ld offices located around the United States or by phone. Enter your contact information when requested. After filing your inquiry and scheduling an intake interview, the EEOC will ask supplemental questions to help begin the process of filing charges. This will occur before your interview. After your intake interview, decide whether to file a charge. Only after filing one, which can be in person or through the online portal, but not over the phone, will the EEOC notify your employer. Can Your Hiring Team Keep Up With Job Seekers

Can Your Hiring Team Keep Up With Job SeekersOver the last decade, your hiring team has faced many challenges with the changing recruiting landscape. From evolving technology to job hopping tendencies and even talent shortages, theres no doubt your hiring team warriors have been put to the test. Over the last 20 years, Stephanie McDonald, CEO of Talent Consultant and job search coach at Hire Performance, has watched the recruiting field evolve firsthand. Above all, she has experienced job seekers changing expectations and demands over the course of two economic slumps, Y2K madness, and even millennial fever. Back when I started recruiting in the dark ages, paper resumes and faxes were the standard way of expressing interest, and job ads were all in print, McDonald says. Now job seekers want a short and easy application process, they want answers quickly, and frequent updates. However, according to McDonald, this isnt the only major change in job seekers expectations. Theyre also expec ting employers to understand their value proposition and be able to articulate it well. Finally, she says, they want transparency in the hiring process with no surprises or poor candidate experiences. If they have a poor experience, companies can end up with negative reviews on sites like Glassdoor.com.With so many expectations and demands, your hiring team has their work cut out for them. Heres how you can help them keep up with job seekers changing expectations 1. Hire for talent, not skills.Recruiters and employers alike are looking to hire qualified, highly skilled employees. However, Vinayak Ranade, CEO at Drafted and former director of engineering and technical recruiting at KAYAK, has seen the talent world especially in tech be flipped on its head. When Steve Jobs announced the Apple AppStore, the tech talent landscape changed forever, Ranade explained. Everyone wanted to have an app on the iOS Appstore, but no one knew how to build apps. The kind of demand/supply mismatch this caused was unprecedented. Ranade explained this forced every company, including KAYAK to focus on hiring talent over skills. It became clear that the skills gap was only going to grow wider, which meant that you had to hire learners and then give them tools to learn. It was the death of skill-based hiring, he said. Even though the death of skill-based hiring occurred years ago, many recruiters continue focusing on skills and years of experience. Create a new list of expectations for each position so your hiring team has a guide. In order of importance, explain what talents, experiences, and skills are fruchtwein important for each position. Recommended Reading Check out our article on whyjob seekers hate yourcandidate experience. 2. Create a marketing plan. When thinking about marketing plans, most of us think of client acquisition. But todays job seekers feel more empowered than ever, which means they want to be marketed to just like your clients. Having a marketing plan to at tract talent is more important than ever, and those companies not thinking about marketing to candidates are losing the war for talent, McDonald explained. Things like videos of current employees who do the job theyre applying for, shadowing a current employee during their interview day, and making sure each team member is adding value versus asking the saatkorn questions as other interviewers, she continued.Everything McDonald explains has one major theme give job seekers an experience. Todays marketing is all about giving each target audience a partalized, unique experience, and thats exactly what job seekers are expecting. Give jobseekers a unique and individualized experience.Click To TweetEncourage your hiring team to create a marketing plan based on unique experiences. Offering job seekers one-on-one time with current employees shows your team is willing to ensure theyre a good fit.3. Make a list of referrals.Yes, thats right. It isnt just job seekers jobs to get referrals and references together anymore. Recruiters need to put in more work than ever to convince candidates that theyre the right choice. Ranade put it best when he said, Top talent no longer has to go and search for jobs the jobs have to search for them.Just like employers like referrals when hiring, job seekers like employee referrals when you reach out to them, he continued. Instead of sending cold emails, the best way to get a job seekers attention is to find someone in the company network who can do the outreach on your behalf, and then make the introduction.Ranade believes every employer is already equipped with a huge network of talent, but it may not be visible. Imagine if a 100 person team could have access to the second-degree network connections for every single person in their company. That would yield a talent pool of a over a million people to draw from, he said. Your hiringteam already had a huge network. Put them to work giving referrals.Click To TweetWhats the best part abo ut these referrals? They are familiar with your employer brand, know someone working at the company, and are likely to respond to outreach and refer a friend. With job seekers changing expectations, your hiring team has a lot to catch up on. However, both experts agree you should proceed with caution. Ranade suggests not getting so wrapped up in the competition for talent that you forget who your most valuable asset is your current employees. On the same note, McDonald warns to watch that your hiring team doesnt eliminate policies and procedures that encourage diversity and inclusion. How do you keep up with job seekers changing expectations? Let us know
